Erie Half Hogger Champ Makes Move to Whole Hog Division

Erie resident Jeremy Kish was the male Half Hogger champ in the 2013 Stanganelli’s Pepperoni Ball Jog ‘n Hog. Boss Hog recently sat down with Jeremy for a short Q&A.

Had you ever done anything like a Jog ‘n Hog before last year?

No. I’ve done a few 5 and 10Ks and some obstacle course races, but Jog ‘n Hog was definitely different than anything else I’ve ever done.

Did you think you had a chance of winning your division?

Not at all. When I started out I could see people ahead of me and could tell they were running fast. But I realized it’s not how fast you can run; it’s getting out of the eating area quickly. One guy was 25 feet ahead of me the whole run out but when I left the eating area he still had a whole pepperoni ball to go.

Did you trash talk the other runners in the eating area?

(Laughs) No, I was too busy eating.

Rumor has it you’re moving up to the Whole Hogger Division this year?

That’s right. I’m going to go with the same strategy and see what happens…don’t push myself too hard, stay loose, drink a lot of water. The fact that I didn’t throw up on three balls made me want to try six.  

Do you think six will be a little harder or a lot harder than three?

Depends on how hungry I am that day. I’m sure I won’t get out of the eating area quite as fast.  

What tips would you offer a Jog ‘n Hog rookie?

Drink a lot of water while you’re eating. I think that helped me the most, because I could chew faster. And be able to run four miles. It’s hard to eat and then finish those last two miles.
